Abstract/Resumo
Alfama is an ancient quarter in the historical core of the city of Lisboa. Given its position next to the port, most of the activities are organised around stevedoring. The inhabitants of Alfama are the protagonists of a strong urban popular culture. Paradoxically, however, they are for the most part rural migrants. The main hypotheses advanced in this article are as follows: a) that migration to this particular social environment allows for rapid professional, cultural and class conversion (a process in which the mastery of everyday urban cultural codes, and the insertion into already existing networks of power and dependency, play a decisive role); b) that a significant proportion of the population maintains a direct link with its village of origin, reinvesting there materially and symbolically pan of the resources obtained from the urban sphere, thus developing strategies of reproduction and reconversion which are ‘played out on two boards’: Alfama and the village.
