Abstract/Resumo
Although several initiatives are underway to stimulate the entry of women in STEM areas, they are still a minority in Brazil and worldwide. This paper presents data on inequalities in STEM around the world and the economic and social consequences for women, as well as various initiatives that are being conducted to combat them. It also presents a project currently developed in the Northeast of Brazil by the Group Girls in Computer Science from the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB). The project currently works with students from five public high schools located in the state’s capital and in the interior, developing strategies to raise awareness about gender inequalities in Computing and to reduce them through debates about professional choices, workshops and training courses in informatics and visits to laboratories and courses of UFPB. Since 2014, the group has worked with more than 900 students, expanding the range of career possibilities to be followed by girls and empowering them to act freely in areas of their choice, even facing barriers or prejudices.
