António Sousa Monteiro holds a bachelor’s degree in European Studies and International Politics and a master’s degree in International Relations from the University of the Azores, and is currently pursuing a PhD in International Studies at ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon. His areas of interest focus on the international role of the Azorean islands, particularly Santa Maria, with an emphasis on the geostrategic and cultural heritage of aviation in the Azores Archipelago and the role of these islands in supporting Atlantic transport, communications, knowledge, and security.
He works as an Aeronautical Information and Communications Operator at the Santa Maria Oceanic Control Centre and has been actively involved in cultural associations on the island. He is a co-founder and the current president of the board of LPAZ Association.
He has co-edited, contributed to, or promoted several works on the theme of aviation cultural heritage, as well as on the Azores and the Atlantic, including Aviateurs-Écrivains: Témoins de l’histoire;L’aviation et son impact sur le temps et l’espace; Under the Goshawk’s Wings – A History of Aviation in the Azores; Europe, the West and the Sea; The Azores, the Atlantic, and the Global Challenges: Geopolitics and Diaspora; and, more recently, One Atlantic, Many Perspectives – Valuing Diversity in the Age of Competition.
Individually, he published Islands in International Relations: Santa Maria (Azores) in the 20th Century.
