João Baía has a Pre-Bologna degree in Sociology from FEUC, a Master's degree in Anthropology from FCSH/NOVA and a PhD in Anthropology, under the Doctoral Program in Migrations. He was a research assistant in the project "PTDC/HIS-HIS/103810/2008 Beyond Failure and Machiavellianism. Portuguese irregular emigration to France, 1957-1974" and was a research assistant in the project that took place at CIES-IUL: Biographical echoes: triangulation in the study of life histories. She coordinated with Rita Cachado the book "Políticas de Habitação e Construção Informal" (Housing Policies and Informal Construction) and with Paula Godinho and Inês Fonseca the eBook "Resistência e/y Memória - Perspectivas Ibero-americanas" (Resistance and/Memory – Ibero-American Perspectives). He published the book that resulted from his master's thesis "SAAL e autoconstrução em Coimbra - Memórias dos moradores do Bairro da Relvinha 1954-1976" (SAAL and self-construction in Coimbra – Memories of the residents of the Relvinha neighborhood 1954-1976). Throughout his academic career he has worked on memory, migrations, border, social movements, housing policies, migratory trajectories and urban social movement activists trajectories, translocal cross-border and migratory networks in urban and rural spaces. He has used a qualitative approach, namely documentary analysis in local and national archives, fieldwork, semi-structured interviews and life stories. In 2023, he completed his PhD in Anthropology, under the Doctoral Program in Migrations at ICS-ULIsboa. He is currently an integrated researcher at CEMRI-UAb, an associate researcher at IHC-FCSH/NOVA and at Emigration Observatory.
