Pedro Manuel de Almeida Carvalho Vieira is a Coordinating Professor with Habilitation at the Department of Electronics, Telecommunications and Computer Engineering (DEETC) of the Lisbon School of Engineering (ISEL) and a researcher at Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT). He holds BSc, MSc and PhD degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, having completed his PhD in Telecommunications in 2008. He was awarded the Specialist Title in Telecommunications by the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon in 2016 and obtained his Habilitation in Information Science and Technology from ISCTE-IUL in 2024. In the same year, he completed an Executive MBA at INDEG-ISCTE Executive Education, complementing his scientific and academic background with advanced training in management, strategy, innovation and leadership.

He has been conducting research at Instituto de Telecomunicações since 1999, with a focus on wireless communications, radio propagation and radio communications, mobile network planning and optimisation, Self-Organizing Networks (SON), Visible Light Communications (VLC), and, more recently, the application of Artificial Intelligence and machine learning to the automation, operation and optimisation of telecommunications networks.

He is the author or co-author of more than 250 scientific publications, including articles in international scientific journals, book chapters, and papers published in the proceedings of international and national conferences. His scientific activity has been developed in collaboration with researchers, academics and students from several higher education institutions and research centres, including Instituto Superior Técnico, ISEL and CTS/UNINOVA, and has received recognition through several scientific and technical awards and distinctions.

He participates in and holds scientific coordination responsibilities in national and international Research and Development projects involving universities, polytechnic institutes, research centres and technology companies. His research activity is characterised by a strong applied research component and by the integration of scientific knowledge creation, technological development and application in real-world engineering contexts. Within this framework, he has promoted the involvement of students and early-career researchers in R&D projects, contributing simultaneously to advanced human resources training and to knowledge transfer between academia and industry.

Research is also a core component of his teaching activity, which he has pursued in higher education since 1997 at undergraduate, master's and doctoral levels. He teaches and coordinates courses in the areas of radio communications, mobile communications, network planning and optimisation, engineering design and technological innovation, seeking to integrate into his teaching the results, methodologies and challenges arising from scientific research and professional engineering practice.

He is also continuously involved in the supervision and co-supervision of undergraduate, master's and doctoral students, having supervised more than one hundred students. His career further includes significant experience in academic coordination and management, as well as a long-standing connection with the engineering profession and the telecommunications sector. He is a Senior Member and Specialist Engineer in Telecommunications of the Portuguese Engineers Association (Ordem dos Engenheiros) and serves on its Telecommunications Specialisation Committee.

His profile is therefore characterised by the integration of scientific and applied research, higher education, advanced training, innovation and knowledge transfer, supported by sustained collaboration among academic institutions, research centres and technology companies, with a particular focus on wireless communications, mobile networks and Artificial Intelligence applied to telecommunications.
