Abstract
This paper focuses on the social impact of the “Charity Soup” (Santa Casa da
Misericórdia de Lisboa) and the “Soup Kitchen of Lisbon” (Sociedade Protectora das
Cozinhas Económicas de Lisboa) among the Lisbon population and the importance of
public and private policies for the maintenance and development of this two institutions
in Lisbon between 1888 and 1918. In this study many topics will be analysed: number
and quality of meals, dietary preferences of Lisbon’s people, identification of the helped
people, hygienic and preventive care, premises, financial support, administrative
structure, etc.
