Abstract/Resumo
Projects can bring value to organisations; however, most times organisations fail to fully realise all conceivable benefits. The purpose of benefits realisation management (BRM) is to help organisations achieve their strategic benefits through projects. Although BRM started focusing on IT projects, it is currently applied to many other areas. The impact of BRM practices on project success has been widely proved. A pioneering systematic literature review was used to identify BRM existing frameworks and establish how can they be effectively implemented in any organisation. Three main frameworks were identified, one based on the BRM lifecycle, another on the capabilities needed for benefits management, and finally, one looking at individual ICT benefits. An effective BRM implementation needs clearly defined benefits so they can be planned for and easily measured. A clear distribution of responsibilities and review of the benefits achieved after project conclusion was also identified as critical factors.
