Augmented, Virtual and Mixed Reality, in their various devices and flavours are a very effective form of communicating, leaving a strong and lasting mental and emotional trace. This research develops its own lines on technological development on immersive VR and AR such as movement tracking, multimodal HCI (speech, silent speech, gesture, touch), with a focus on solutions for Architecture, Engineering and Construction Industries.

In the scope of Virtual Reality we developed VIARmodes and VIARmodes4BIM. We employ both self in-house and proprietary systems to visualize and interact with BIM data in virtual reality environments. VIARmodes4BIM system has been developed internally and has a series of features that enable immersive navigation and natural multimodal interaction. It allows several users with different AEC specialties to preview and explore the building in full scale, at the same time, experiencing a strong sense of presence and interactivity while carrying collaborative design briefs.

We used the potentials of Augmented Reality in several apps namely, ARch, ARch4maps, ARch4models and SeeARch.

ARch4models - This research focus on the development and evaluation of a computer tool that enriches physical scale models of buildings, which are still commonly used during architecture and civil engineering design processes.
The main goal of this work is to understand how we can bond together physical and virtual representation modes by superimposing (or registering) them, to increase the understanding of an architectural design, while at the same time allowing them to show the alternatives or the evolution of such design. ARch4maps - This research focused primarily on the definition of an augmented reality app that allows users to take advantage of cities’ physical maps by increasing the information they provide and enabling the visualization of buildings in an interactive and dynamic way. More info here http://istar.iscte-iul.pt/portfolio-posts/augmented-reality-for-architectural-building-design/

SeeARch – See Architecture Through Digital Technologies - The goal of this research is to combine knowledge from several disciplines, in the development of a common base of information on the architecture of cities. 2015 Instalação/Obra de Arte Escola de Chicago: arranha-céus digitais On the scope of the Integrated Master in Architecture from ISCTE-IUL, and starting from the possibilities brought by the Information Society we conducted a link between History, Building Technologies and the Digital Technologies developed at ISTAR-IUL. The exhibition "SCHOOL OF CHICAGO: digital skyscrapers ", aims and challenges the display and the revelation of the architectural culture of the Chicago School from the final of the 19th century to the first decades of the 20th century, by enhancing the historical knowledge as an active tool in today's digital universe. The exhibition focuses on the deployment of paradigmatic skyscrapers in Chicago, allowing multiple radiographic looks (urban morphology, construction foundations, structures, layouts, coatings, equipment, materials), through the use of digital technologies (immersive virtual reality, augmented reality and 3D video-mapping) that allow us to observe this reality by innovative ways.
