AB - Contemporary labor market landscape can be said to be in a state of profound transition, in a world in which companies and industries are boundaryless, every organization is digital, hybrid work environments are taking hold, the employee–employer contract is up for renewal (and potential overhaul), and the very definition of 'being at work' is in a state of flux (McKinsey, 2023). Recent empirical evidence (Gartner, 2023; McKinsey, 2023) suggests that is a fundamental disconnect between employers and employees: employers say the top reasons for increasing levels of attrition are that employees are looking for better jobs, compensation and work–life balance; employees tend to paint a different picture: among the top reasons for, for example, quitting a job were not feeling valued by the organization or by their individual managers and not feeling a sense of belonging at work. This Keynote Session presentation explores a concrete underlying change in employee-employer relations (consumerization of relations and practices) and possible implications in long-held assumptions about managing people, work and workplaces.
