AB - Blockchain is fundamental for securing data processes, and the main goal of this research is to identify blockchain characteristics and their applications to electronic health records. In comparison with traditional paper-based medical records, electronic health records (EHRs) have gained widespread popularity due to their efficiency, enhanced security, and ability to reduce data redundancy. However, despite their advantages, EHRs still face challenges related to poor interoperability and unresolved privacy issues. One potential solution to address these shortcomings is leveraging blockchain technology, a distributed ledger protocol consisting of encrypted blocks of data organized in chains. This paper aims to explore the intersection of EHRs and blockchain technology and introduces a systematic literature review which helped to create the dimensions of a theoretical model to help hospitals to implement blockchain technology to electronic health records. The methodology used is a systematic literature review, and the main findings lead to the conclusion that this research gives hospitals knowledge to help them to create implement a proposed model for blockchain implementation in electronic health records, for a more trusted, ethical, transparent, and unbiased use of this technology.
