TY - CHAP TI - The Convergence of Resilience Culture and Digital Transformation in the Cities of Future: the Case Study of Milan and Rome T2 - Swarm Intelligence Applications for the Cities of the Future AU - Stellacci, S. AU - Borsoi, G. PY - 2025 UR - https://www.routledge.com/Swarm-Intelligence-Applications-for-the-Cities-of-the-Future/ManoDomingos-JoseSousa/p/book/9781032656755 AB - As cities evolve and grow, the enhancement of urban resilience to climate change emerges as a top priority in environmental policies. Resource utilization, public health and well-being, and risk management are among the challenges facing contemporary cities. In this fast-changing context, resilient targets can be achieved considering a multi-dimensional framework that address the quality of both the urban environment and community assets. To meet the EU targets by 2030, it is crucial to implement efficient integrated strategic planning through digital information systems, technological innovations, and novel models of urban governance. This study provides a comparative analysis on urban resilience levels in Milan and Rome, two Italian cities members of 100 Resilient Cities initiative (2013–2019). These cities, both characterized by high population density and complex urban systems, are susceptible to a range of threats, including urban heat islands and rainfall flooding. Beyond identifying some relevant aspects of 100 Resilient Cities initiative, this study offers an overview of the environmental criticities of Milan and Rome. It also provides brief reflections on the influence of digital technologies in reshaping the future of these cities, contributing to foster a culture centered around sustainability and resilience.
