TY - GEN TI - Os media e a comunicação do medo: A cobertura noticiosa em Portugal de atentados terroristas na Europa AU - Estêvão, T. PY - 2024 AB - This research focuses on the study of the symbiotic relationship between terrorism, media and fear. The thesis under discussion aims to demonstrate that national media, through framing, contribute to sustaining narratives of risk and fear associated with terrorism. The empirical analysis considers a mixed methodology, which combines qualitative and quantitative methods. The inquiry arises from the investigation, with the aim of obtaining opinions regarding the perception of risk and fear of terrorist attacks in Portugal. The content analysis considers 1,125 news pieces and articles, from sixteen social media outlets considered. It also comprises a framing analysis that identifies the prevalent frames adopted and the way in which they enable narratives associated with the risk and fear of terrorist attacks. The interview comes after carrying out the content analysis and focuses on journalists, directly involved in the news coverage of the attacks considered, in order to understand some of the options taken in the news coverage. The main results obtained support that: (i) the vast majority of respondents consider that the media have a primary role in promoting the existence of a risk of terrorist attacks in Portugal; (ii) the content analysis of the news corpus considered shows a recurrent adoption of frames associated with the risk and fear of terrorist attacks; (iii) the interviews carried out demonstrate that the journalistic media analyzed are poorly prepared to carry out news coverage of terrorist attacks, free from frameworks associated with risk and fear.
