Espanto, comoção e Primeiro Direito. São estas as palavras que me vêm à mente enquanto aprecio as fotografias da Pauliana expostas nos panos que dançam à minha volta. As imagens deixam-me inquieta, como se tivesse recebido um murro no estômago. Foram estas fotografias tiradas em Portugal no século XXI ou ainda nos anos sessenta do século passado? Obviamente sei a resposta e comovo-me. 
A Pauliana Valente Pimentel traz-nos uma perspetiva, menos conhecida, das condições em que vive uma parte da população portuguesa. Tratam-se de condições de habitação indignas, desumanas mesmo. Mas a Pauliana mostra-nos sempre beleza em todas as fotografias, mesmo quando parece uma tarefa quase impossível, uma beleza poética. Poética porque capta a beleza singela dos momentos do quotidiano e de festas, seja nos instantes de alegria, ou na combinação de cores e de dança. 
A realidade crua destas fotografias ultrapassa a ficção que nos chega a casa através de séries, novelas ou redes sociais. Tratam-se dos excluídos dos excluídos. Famílias que desconhecem qualquer estrutura social que ultrapasse as fronteiras do seu bairro. Imaginem desconhecer alguém como o Cristiano Ronaldo, um ídolo reconhecido até nas mais recônditas aldeias da Índia. Por outras palavras, fazem parte da pobreza extrema, em que se concentram as desigualdades, como o analfabetismo ou pouca escolaridade, o desemprego, a gravidez precoce e o alojamento de terra batida, sem água canalizada.

Astonishment, sentiment, and First Right. these were the words that came to mind as I observed Pauliana's photographs, displayed on the cloths that danced around me. The images made me uneasy, as if I’d been punched in the stomach. Were these photographs taken in Portugal in the 21st century or even in the sixties of the previous century? I obviously knew the answer and I was moved. 
Pauliana Valente Pimentel brings us a lesser-known perspective of the conditions in which part of the Portuguese population lives. We look at undignified, even inhuman, housing conditions. But Pauliana always delivers us beauty with every shot, even when it seems a near impossible task, a poetic beauty. Poetic because it captures the simple beauty of everyday moments and parties, whether in instants of joy, or in the blend of colors and dancing.
The raw reality of these photographs surpasses the fiction that comes home to us through television series, soap operas, or social media. These are the excluded of the excluded. Families who are unaware of any social structure beyond the borders of their neighborhood. Imagine not knowing someone like Cristiano Ronaldo, an idol recognized even in the most remote villages of India. In other words, they belong to the realm of extreme poverty, where inequalities condense, such as illiteracy or minimal schooling, unemployment, early pregnancy, and dirt-floor housing with no plumbing.
