Understanding the spatial and temporal correlations between Airbnb and urban renewal in Lisbon is
crucial for effective urban planning.
Nevertheless, the existing research lacks a thorough examination of the spatial and temporal
dynamics between Airbnb and urban renewal in Lisbon. While some studies have focused on Airbnb
and urban renewal independently, there are limited joint investigations exploring their interactions
and correlations using georeferenced datasets.
The thesis thoroughly investigates the interaction between Airbnb and urban renewal in Lisbon,
employing a methodological framework designed to analyze economic activities across different
urban contexts.
The research presents a methodology for modeling georeferenced data sourced from different
outlets, including Airbnb listings, urban renewal permits, and additional urban datasets. The primary
objective is to address the existing literature gap by elucidating the interactions and correlations
between Airbnb activities and urban renewal processes.
The primary aim is to explore and establish the spatial-temporal correlations between Airbnb
listings and urban renewal in Lisbon during the period from March 2015 to March 2019. This research
uses advanced analytical methodologies, incorporating spatial analysis and big data processing
techniques to achieve comprehensive insights.
The results provide evidence-based information for urban planning and decision-making.
Enhanced comprehension of the phenomenon empowers targeted interventions to mitigate the
negative effects of Airbnb on the community. This acquired knowledge forms the basis for endorsing
urban renewal strategies, especially in critical areas.
