AB - Cristoforo Borri was the most influential astronomer in Portugal during the 17th century. Born in northern Italy and a member of the Society of Jesus, Borri stood out as an astronomer in the distressing times that followed Galileo's telescopic observations and condemnation. In addition to the astronomical observations he carried out in Cochinchina, where he served as a missionary, and especially in Coimbra, where he taught, Borri authored a book very influential in Portugal. After a detailed study of Borri's biography, this book examines the development of his cosmological thought and its influence on seventeenth-century Portugal. It argues that, along with his astronomical work, the epistemological promotion of mathematics, which he carried out as a professor at the College of Arts at the University of Coimbra, was crucial to his success in this country. This book analyzes the different dimensions of Borri's work regarding astronomy, cosmology, and mathematics and their influence on Portugal.
