Traditional pedagogical models seem insufficient for the profession's evolving demands, often remaining disconnected from real-world contexts and constraining the imaginative, critical thinking needed today. In response, this research identifies the core competencies that today’s architect must nurture. It then explores whether utopian and radical imagination, when translated into countercultural teaching practices, can effectively respond to these needs. This study proposes a five-layer analytical framework as both a diagnostic and propositional tool. Rather than a static model, it functions as an iterative map, tracing how core Architectural competencies are activated by specific parameters of utopian and radical thought: from modes of thinking and acting, to conceptual ideals, to observable pedagogical indicators. The goal is to map a path toward structural transformations in the way Architecture is taught and practiced. To assess its applicability, the framework is applied to three illustrative case studies: the post-revolutionary SAAL Process in Portugal (1974–76), Lina Bo Bardi’s pedagogical vision for FAU-USP (1957), and the ongoing In Situ Laboratory (2012–present). The analysis reveals that the most impactful pedagogies are never purely utopian or radical, but emerge from a dynamic synthesis of both. By consciously nurturing the architect’s innate utopian and radical nature, AE can cultivate a new generation of professionals equipped with the critical, systemic, and imaginative capacities our world requires.
