AB  - This article presents the outcomes of the architectural intervention at Ramalde Sports Park, aimed at creating new facilities for rugby, football, athletics, and archery. Originally designed between 1952 and 1960 by Fernando Távora, the park was part of the broader master plan for the Ramalde Residential Unit, promoted by the Federation of Social Security Funds. Located north of Avenida da Boavista, the complex faces the row of houses built for the Grémio dos Armazenistas de Mercearia, also designed by Távora.
The intervention occupies the previously unused northern section of the park, offering an opportunity to revisit and reinterpret Távora’s original vision—particularly the park’s role as a mediator within the residential unit. The project engages in a dialogue with the conceptual foundations of Portuguese architectural culture, especially those associated with the “Escrita do Porto” (Porto School of Writing), which Eduardo Fernandes identifies as central to the shaping of contemporary Portuguese architectural identity.
Beyond theoretical discourse, the project embodies a grounded practice rooted in site-specific knowledge, architectural references, and an ethical commitment to shaping a cultural landscape in harmony with the territory’s ecological and social dynamics. This approach also foregrounds a pedagogical dimension, offering a framework that immerses students in the complex realities of architectural design processes. In doing so, the intervention not only revitalizes a historic sports facility but also fosters critical engagement with architectural culture and practice in Portugal.
