AB - The sample, codebook, and dataset correspond to Study 1b of the Aversion2agony project.

The content analysis is based on a sample of 1,731 news items published between 2016 and 2024 on the digital platforms of Expresso, Público, The Guardian, and The Telegraph. Variables examined include the country of publication, press outlet, occupation of the individuals involved, their stance on euthanasia, arguments for and against euthanasia, the extent to which each argument is expressed, the source and level of each argument, and the evaluation scale applied to these arguments. To ensure rigorous statistical analysis, tests employing 5,000 bootstrap samples were applied.

The Aversion2agony project is a pioneering study that aims to analyse and compare journalistic coverage of euthanasia/assisted death in Portuguese and British societies, within a changing social context where death has become a public and mediated issue. This research explores journalistic practices, social representations, and meanings associated with political, religious, and medical dimensions, decoding the discourses and media constructions within these societies. The primary objective is to understand how these factors influence journalistic narratives and social perceptions of euthanasia, thereby contributing to an enhanced understanding of cultural and institutional dynamics around this topic.
