AB - This chapter investigates the dynamics of the European branch of the Global Ecovillage Network’s (GEN-Europe) engagement with EU funding schemes, more specifically, how grassroots innovations engage with EU funding schemes through projects that promote sustainability transitions. On the basis of an in-depth analysis of GEN-Europe, this study illustrates how EU funding not only supports but also shapes the operational and strategic capacities of grassroots initiatives. The findings contribute to the broader discourse on sustainability transitions by highlighting the dual role of funding in both empowering and structuring grassroots innovation, thereby offering insights into the complexities of navigating institutional funding landscapes. Methodologically, this research employs a qualitative approach, comprising nine semi-structured interviews with key members of the case study, participant observation, and three rounds of coding, both deductive and inductive, inspired by grounded theory (Flick, 2011; Charmaz, 2012).

Our findings reveal a strong alignment between EU sustainability policy dynamics, as enacted through project grants, and the manner in which GEN-Europe applies and utilises EU-funded projects. The professionalisation of the network is crucial for securing these funds, enabling it to provide enhanced support for its members. Additionally, we introduce the concept of a ‘project-supported network’, an emerging framework that characterises grassroots innovation sustained by project dynamics and project funds.
