TY - CPAPER TI - Women’s Voices. From Goa to India through Nationalist Journeys T2 - Research Seminar Series AU - Perez, R.M. PY - 2017 CY - Ahmedabad AB - The nationalist movement in Portuguese India has not been methodically analysed, and the studies produced exclude women's voices. Although there was indeed a feeble female participation in the nationalist process there were women who, since the beginning of the anti-colonial movement were engaged in the larger Indian group of Gandhian satyagrahis, thus merging into the pan- Indian freedom movement. This paper aims at presenting the key role played by a small constellation of women nationalists, particularly one who, from the bordering states of Goa (Karnataka and Maharashtra) created a radio station that broadcasted to Goa the silenced voices of the resistance to Portuguese rule. By the same token, her life story helps us to recognize that Goan annexation to India was set in motion years before the Operation Vijay took place. ER -
