PY - 2019 CY - Lisbon UR - http://www.encontrociencia.pt/2019/ AB - All touristic cities like Lisbon have certain districts where attractions are concentrated. Destinations sustainability is often at stake, because overcrowding overloads infrastructures, endangers environment due to extra garbage, noise and visual pollution, and reduces their authenticity due to the replacement of traditional businesses by mass-oriented ones. Tourists’ experience degrades, residents are negatively affected, and stronger signs of their tension are becoming evident. This talk will describe an ongoing project in the Santa Maria Maior district in Lisbon to mitigate overcrowding, by fostering a balanced distribution of visitors, while promoting the visitation of sustainable points of interest. This project combines several ICT technologies such as software defined radio (SDR), long range wide area networks (LoRaWAN), open data (OpenStreetMap), cloud-based microservices architecture, big data analytics, machine learning algorithms, mobile computing and an innovative tourism engagement approach dubbed "histcaching".
