TY - CPAPER TI - How far can (travel) films travel? On the trail of Amélia Borges Rodrigues (1902-1945) T2 - 10th Annual Small Cinemas Conference, ICS, Lisbon, Portugal AU - Sampaio, S. PY - 2019 CY - Lisboa UR - https://smallcinemassmallspaces.wordpress.com AB - Amélia Borges Rodrigues (1902-1945), an Azorean migrant who lived in Rio de Janeiro during the 1930s, is known for directing and producing 41 short documentaries about her journeys in Portugal. These images targeted the Portuguese immigrant community in Brazil to address feelings of home longing and, eventually, promote roots tourism. The paper combines methods drawn from film studies, film history and the social sciences (such as film analysis, multi-archival research and multi-sited fieldwork) to unravel a micro-history of film production and circulation that takes into account gender and transnational dimensions (in Portugal and Brazil), often ignored in more nation-oriented studies.
