TY - CPAPER TI - Welcome, Wilkommen, Bienvenut, Bienvenidos to Baixa Pombalina: a review of Baixa Pombalina recent transformation T2 - Book of Proceedings of Third International Conference of Young Urban Researchers VL - III AU - Brandão, A. AU - Negrão, Rita PY - 2018 SP - 86-108 CY - Lisboa AB - Focusing on public space use and design, this paper addresses the changing urban dynamics of Lisbon's Baixa Pombalina over the past decades particularly regarding touristification issues. If in the last decades, the main problems identified were related to the degradation of built heritage, depopulation and loss of attractiveness, in recent years, leisure and tourism activities have gained importance in its urban dynamics, with impacts on public space use as well as public life dynamics that need to be fully acknowledged. We analyse the transformation process between 1988 and 2018, collecting data on changing patterns, public space projects, public policies and local strategies. Then we address current public space dynamics and uses through a public space assessment. Finally, we intend to discuss if public space can embrace both local population and tourists needs, delivering value for all. ER -
