TY - CPAPER TI - Coherence of EU trade policy with NTPOs: geographical case studies T2 - World Trade Forum Follow-Up Webinars AU - Pal, Timea AU - Franklin Maduko PY - 2020 UR - https://globalgovernanceprogramme.eui.eu/world-trade-forum-2020/ AB - This is the first of three webinars organised around the World Trade Forum book project for 2021. Every year, the European University Institute and the World Trade Institute come together to organise the World Trade Forum, with focus on a specific topic, the outcome of which is an edited collection with contributions from economists, political scientists and lawyers. This year’s edited collection will gather research outputs on the topics covered by the H2020 Respect project, analysing EU trade policy coherence with non-trade policy objectives (NTPOs). The three webinars will explore the research questions and preliminary findings, which will be further analysed in this year’s World Trade Forum book. This first webinar will bring forward some concrete examples of the challenges of EU trade policy coherence with NTPOs, with a focus on geographical case studies. The first presentation by Jacques Pelkmans will examine the work done jointly with Weinen Wu on coherence with NTPOs in EU-China cooperation and dialogues. Timea Pal will then present heir joint work carried out with Franklin Maduko and Laszlo Bruszt on partner countries' ‘demand side’ factors as determinants of the implementation of EU NTPO policy initiatives in developing economies, with particular attention to the EU’s eastern and southern neighbouring countries. After looking at the far East and at Europe’s immediate neighbours, the final presentation by David Kleimann will present his current work with Fabiano De Andreade Correa on the coherence of trade and NTPOs in EU-Mercosur negotiations.
