AB - Digital technologies can help augment the experience of heritage both onsite and offsite. For example, when the available information on site is not enough, digital technologies can help augment it and allow visitors to increase their knowledge. Also, digital technologies can enable heritage sites to be experienced by people far away. To promote these experiences and make them attractive several technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality, and multimodal and multisensory interactions have been developed and tested.

In this talk, I will present some work developed that explores digital technologies and combines them with architectural heritage sites. For example, SeeArch and ARch4maps are augmented reality-based tools that enable outdoor and indoor augmentation of buildings and physical maps. Also, virtual reality-based tools, such as VIARmodes4BIM, allow to navigate in 3D models freely and use a multimodal interaction by voice and gestures. Besides performing satisfaction and usability tests with the developed tools, also we used them combined in large exhibitions like “The School of Chicago: digital skyscrapers” and “Artificial Realities: Virtual as an aesthetic medium in architectural ideation” developed in the scope of the Lisbon Architecture Triennale 2019.
