TY - CPAPER TI - Please Hug Each Other: Transmitting Values of Community and Connection Through Touch in Forró Dance T2 - Dance and Economy, Dance Transmission. Proceedings of the 31st Symposium of the ICTM Study Group on Ethnochoreology AU - Graf, S. PY - 2021 CY - Klaipeda UR - http://www.ictmusic.org/event/31st-symposium-ictm-study-group-ethnochoreology AB - In this presentation, I will demonstrate the power and importance of touch as a means of transmitting three underlying values within forró - to connect physically, emotionally, and socially to one another. Forró is a social, couples dance form originating from the Northeast of Brazil, and is danced in a close embrace. Through this touch, one comes to learn more than just the steps of the dance - one comes to find the values of generosity, goodwill, community, and connection can also be transmitted. Based on ethnographic research findings from a case study of forró dancing in Brussels, I will demonstrate how touch, within the framework of forró, functions as an important medium of interpersonal communication; stimulates empathic connections; and is a primary means by which communal values are transmitted, exemplified, and reinforced. Through a small introductory class, using a number of touch-based connection exercises utilized in forró in Brussels, participants will be provided with experiential knowledge about the important role of touch in the transmission of forró along with the steps and the cultural values surrounding it. Participants will explore firsthand that a foundational characteristic of forró is the exchange of kinesthetic and intellectual knowledge, between the two people sharing a dance. The goal of this presentation is to stimulate a wider discussion about the value of touch in dance transmission, in the context of social dance or other dance forms. ER -
