AB - In recent years, creativity has been acknowledged as an important element for the construction and requalification of public space. If, in some cases, it can be argued that the exploration of the concept of creativity is sometimes a bu- zzword for the use of the arts for city gentrification, we can also say that the continuous development of creativity in public space is a sign of recognition of this space as a place of free expression and action. In other words, public space must be the space one can use freely, creatively, and express their own identity. It should be a space of exploration and discovery, a performative place, mea- ning that the experience of space is an essential element for its construction.
In the field of visual arts, the exploration of creativity and its relations with pu- blic space and other activities, has been developed by artists such as Duchamp, Joseph Beuys or Thomas Hirschhorn.
More recently, collectives of architects and artists have developed new approa- ches for the construction and use of public space, exploring the importance of the arts, creativity, and action in the public realm.
This paper, in addition to a theoretical reflection on the importance of creativity and the arts in public space, seeks to demonstrate through the example of a project developed by muf architecture/art in Hackney Wick and Fish Island, how the relation between art and architecture is important to design spaces where creativity can be valued and explored.
