AB - This project started with the brief for a municipal outdoor swimming-pool complex with three pools (for adults, beginners and children). For its realisation, a plot of land belonging to the Campo Maior municipality was made available. The plot, which was located beside a former advanced military defence fort linked to the old city wall, formed a natural inland promontory with a view over Spain, as well as over the city and its surroundings. From the project’s brief and the natural vocation of the site, Carrilho da Graça designed a large square ‘plateau’ topped by a pergola, representing the principal mediating element of an intense relationship with the landscape. Regarding the composition generated by the horizontal rotation of two regular geometric figures, Carrilho da Graça poetically states that “it forms a spiral on top of the horizon line”.
