AB - When challenged in 2004 by Manuel Graça Dias to present three works that he admired for issue 217 of
the Jornal dos Arquitectos , João Luís Carrilho da Graça decided to refer to the Leça da Palmeira Swimming Pool, the Braga Municipal Stadium and the Sintra National Palace in a text entitled “Permanência”. Since Flashback / Carrilho da Graça is a retrospective exhibition about the work of this architect, and is also, afer all, about the references that accompanied him through
the more than forty years of his career, the relevance of a conversation between João Luís Carrilho da Graça and his contemporaries Álvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura – bearing in mind the impossibility of inviting the master builder of the Sintra National Palace to join the conversation – became evident, as these are authors of works admired by Carrilho da Graça and have become inevitable references in his career.
