Abstract
In this presentation I share some reflections, in the form of a storyboard, regarding an ongoing documentary project concerning livelihoods in present-day Mozambique. The country’s ‘new age’ of extractivism with the boom of LNG and hydrocarbons has generated discursive and material horizons that have challenged the ‘traditional’ space of livelihoods for Mozambicans across the rural and urban spectrum. In this framework, the notion of machamba has traditionally conveyed and epistemology of a land/livelihood nexus. In the age of extractivism, with the heightened pressure on land, what kind of futures does this machamba hold? The documentary performs movements between the patchwork of literal and metaphorical perceptions/experiences of machamba in Mozambique, and questions what kind of machambas emerge within and beyond extractive endeavors.
