Abstract
Acculturation is a well-researched subject, yet there remains limited research on refugees as distinct from migrants. The mutuality approach to acculturation emphasizes the bidirectional influence between the minority and the host community, recognizing that both parties contribute to the process of cultural adaptation. From this perspective, it is argued that the best predictor of intergroup outcomes will not be the fit between real attitudes but rather between one group’s desires and their perception of what the other group wants in the Concordance Model of Acculturation. The present study consists of two sub-studies. The first examined socialpsychological factors associated with Syrian refugees' adaptation in Turkey by considering their own and perceived acculturation orientations, discrimination, sociocultural adaptation, and psychological adaptation. Contrary to expectations, results showed a negative association between culture maintenance and psychological adaptation; however, refugees’ perceived desire for contact was positively related to psychological and sociocultural adaptations. Finally, perceived discordance of acculturation was negatively associated with psychological and sociocultural adaptations while being positively related to perceived discrimination. The second study consists of a meta-analytical structural equation model exploring the perceived threat, acculturation, and adaptation of refugees.
