Abstract
Value creation has always been an important subject of interest in the history of economic thought and, in particular, in the cultural economics field. The contemporary changes that led to the emergence of cognitive-cultural capitalism brought new forms of mediation and cultural production and consumption that challenge the analysis of culture’s value(s). Furthermore, the impacts of cultural activities are often underestimated, and evaluation exercises have difficulties in including the diversity of values generated by these activities in economic, social, cultural, environmental or participatory terms. Combining work conducted on different research projects, this paper addresses the ongoing changes in value creation processes and proposes a new conceptual and analytical approach to assess the impact of cultural activities in a given territory. An impact assessment method (co)developed with actors in the cultural and creative field is proposed. Institutions can use this toolkit to (self)evaluate the value created by their activity multidimensionally.
