Studies on the experiences of transnational parents have been criticized to be gender biased as most studies focus on mothers' experiences, with little emphasis on those of fathers. This critique exposes the knowledge gap on how fathers handle the challenges of their parenting roles across borders. This study explores gender considerations in transnational parenting among Ghanaian parents in Portugal. It focuses on the feelings and expectations of mothers/ fathers to continue providing care for their children after migration, even though society does not appear to have the same expectations for fathers as mothers. The study also discusses the roles of existing family structures prior to the migration of parents as principal consideration during the decision making process in anticipation of a successful migration and transnational parenting experience. It gives an overview of the major considerations during the migration decision making process, family support systems available to principal migrants and the challenges of parenting/ caregiving on separated families in both hosting and sending countries.
