Abstract
The title of this lecture, presented in manifesto fashion, offers at least three distinct interpretations. Firstly, the contents of this lecture started to be thought in the year in which the centenary of Vers une Architecture was celebrated, one of the most important — if not the most important — book on architecture of the 20th century. Initially conceived under the provocative moniker "Architecture or Révolution", Le Corbusier championed the notion of architecture as a catalyst for societal transformation, a theme echoed in this lecture. Secondly, the timing of this lecture in 2024 holds significance, coinciding with the fiftieth anniversary of democracy in Portugal, marking the historic April 25th Revolution of 1974. This temporal alignment establishes a narrative continuum, linking past revolutionary fervor to present-day discourse. Lastly, the title draws a more literal reference to Joseph Beuys' iconic work "La rivoluzione siamo noi", wherein Beuys strides forth with a palpable sense of purpose, beckoning others to join him in action. The underlying theme for this lecture refers precisely to the need to create a platform for public discussion on architecture and the city we aspire to inhabit — since while architects and citizens may not wield direct control over political and economic forces shaping the built environment, they nonetheless may serve as vital agents for instigating paradigm shifts.
