Abstract
Between 2010 and 2015, Portugal went through a severe economic and social crisis that had a deep impact on the way of life of its population, mainly as a result of the severe austerity measures applied as a solution to the sovereign public debt. This period witnessed a significant rise in unemployment, wage cutbacks and an overwhelming increase in taxes, accompanied by cuts in social benefits, public health, education and social security services (Reis et al., 2013). In this context, many people found themselves unable to honor their financial commitments and to secure independent means of sustenance for themselves and their families.
