The BRI, a China-led global economic strategy, is designed with the overarching goal of fostering an interconnected world economy. This objective is to be achieved by providing inter-regional connectivity, unimpeded trade with market diversification, and financial integration for the countries involved. The CPEC, a strategic hub of the BRI, serves as a key connector between South Asia, China, the Middle East, and Central Asia. In 2016, Saudi Arabia set forth its Vision 2030, which sought to reduce the country's reliance on traditional energy exports, secure market diversification, and explore opportunities for fostering new trade and investment partnerships. To achieve these goals, Saudi Arabia identified CPEC as a corridor that could offer inter-regional connectivity and provide more direct access to non-traditional markets, such as Central Asia. Furthermore, the corridor also has the potential to serve as a conduit for expanding the Saudi Arabian economic presence in Asia, particularly in China, a rapidly growing energy consumer. In light of these considerations, Saudi Arabia became a member of the BRI initiative in 2018 and promptly initiated the development of its own CPEC projects, including an oil refinery in Gwadar and the development of the Rashakai Industrial Park. This paper therefore examines the challenges and opportunities associated with Saudi Arabia's involvement in the CPEC, including geopolitical considerations and the potential for long-term economic benefits.
