Abstract/Resumo
This paper deals with the issue of food security in Portugal during the twenty-first century. This issue has re-emerged in developed countries due to the systemic crisis that has marked this century. In addition to the environmental and ecological crisis, the twenty-first century has been char- acterized by an economic and financial crisis, a global increase in grain prices, a pandemic crisis, and, most recently, a geopolitical crisis brought on by the war between Russia and Ukraine. All these facts contributed to the disruption of global food value chains. It is there- fore necessary to address the problem of the country’s commercial dependence on food. The research carried out considers the international dependency of the country on food commodities, in particular within the European region, by means of a quantitative approach. The findings indicate that creating unified European public policies to control volatility is crucial given the current geopolitical and climate-related crises that have a direct influence on food supply and production.
