Abstract
The growing awareness of the destructive effects of technological innovation is reflected on the need to consider the need of other types of innovation in the analysis of development processes, particularly given the diversity/complexity of problems that characterize our societies: Demographic trends, inequality, structural unemployment, knowledge intensification and globalization, and financialization. In this paper, we discuss the role of social innovation in economic development in the economics literature. We draw on the idea that social innovation entails a transformative and collaborative approach that can be part of the solution to the above-mentioned problem, propose an analytical framework and conduct a systematic literature review. The results show that this is still an underexplored topic in economics literature.
