Abstract
Coherent multipath interference (MPI) occurs in optical networks when multiple replicas of the transmitted signal propagate over different optical paths with differential delays smaller than the laser source coherence time. This paper investigates the impact of this phenomenon on coherent optical quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) systems and derives new analytical expressions for the moment generating function of the decision variable and for the average symbol error probability. Furthermore, the tolerance of QPSK to coherent MPI is quantified and a comparison with the incoherent MPI is also carried out, showing that the last impairment is more detrimental than the first one especially when a large number of replicas is considered.
