(English) The repression of the Spanish refugees in Campo Maior: The November 1944 operation

En noviembre de 1944, una operación policial-militar conjunta de la Policía de Vigilancia y Defensa del Estado (PVDE), la Guardia Nacional Republicana (GNR), el Ejército portugués y la Guardia Civil española condujo a la detención de más de dos docenas de españoles en el Municipio de Campo Maior. Organizada por la PVDE, la operación tenía como objetivo detener a un grupo de refugiados españoles considerados por la policía política como «peligrosos salteadores y comunistas». En este artículo analizamos cómo las autoridades portuguesas tuvieron conocimiento de la existencia de refugiados españoles en la zona, cómo se preparó la operación y cómo se desarrolló la acción, tratando de identificar y caracterizar a los refugiados. ************************************************************************************************************************** In November 1944, a joint police-military operation between the State Surveillance and Defense Police (PVDE), the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Portuguese Army and the Spanish Civil Guard led to the arrest of more than two dozen Spaniards in the municipality of Campo Maior. Organized by the PVDE, the operation aimed to detain a group of Spanish refugees considered by the political police to be «dangerous robbers and communists». In this article, we analyze how the Portuguese authorities became aware of the existence of Spanish refugees in the area, how the operation was prepared and how the action took place, seeking to identify and characterize the refugees.
