Abstract
The present paper attempts to examine and to present whether and to what extent consumer behavior and therefore the financial management of households is influenced by mental factors. Although the traditional microeconomic paradigm adequately explains theoretically consumer behavior, there is plenty of empirical evidence that this is also affected by psychological factors related with mental separation of expenses made by individual consumers.
The empirical research was based on a random sample of 460 individuals gathered from Kastoria City in Northern Greece using a questionnaire drawn from the work of Antonides et al. (2011). Empirical results explain in a great extent what are the main characteristics of people who use mental budgeting, under what circumstances and what is the impact of mental budgeting in financial management of household.
