We analyze some of the results based on 48 in-depth interviews that are part of a PhD thesis on conjugal cohabitation in Portuguese society. In addition to focusing on the role of different experiences and ways of looking at sexuality in the trajectories of the formation of cohabiting couples, this presentation addresses questions concerning the control of female sexuality and the privatization of the couple. The idea is to contribute also to show the complexity of the Portuguese modernization in family and private life. We will try to illustrate, through the selection of five empirical examples, the importance of social class, gender, the biographical trajectories and, especially now, some aspects such as religion, the presence of rurality on families living in urban areas, and social pressure on young couples by older generations that were before unexplored aspects. In this paper we will try to understand, in particular, changes and continuities in the face of sexuality and gender relations.
