Abstract/Resumo
The election of Donald Trump and victory of Brexit can be seen as serious signs of the end of West as we have known it since 1945 being nigh. Is this really the case? What are the key indicators of major divisions between US, Britain, and different member states of the EU? Last but not least what the key implications of this for the future of the EU in general and European security in particular? I will argue that the fact that President Trump initially pronounced NATO as obsolete and the EU as in the brink of partition is a major shift from all his predecessors in terms of basic perception and preferences. But US (and British) institutions and establishment will resist major changes in relations with NATO and the EU. But as German.chancellor Merkel made clear this still requires the EU to prove its resilience, relevance and autonomy in global security affairs in particular in its crisis-prone neighborhood.
