This paper addresses the problem of social protection and mutual assistance in Bissau in order to delineate a more accurate view of the populations strategies to cope with social and health risk. It also follows the main non-state health and social support providers, presenting a detailed picture of the actual agents in service of the population. It aims to discuss how the commodification of health care in Bissau led to its perception as a risk that is informally addressed through a myriad of ground-based organizations.
