It is a fact that statistical data of European populations do not allow us a better understanding of their actual sociolinguistic composition. This evidence results from the lack of knowledge (and acknowledgement) for the existing linguistic diversity, which has been strengthen by a deafening silence (Pereira), and leading towards the social and political menorization of wide sections of the population. In this presentation, we aim to discuss the researchers’ needs for self-reflexivity tools, as subjects categorizing populations and socio-linguistic changes that have been historically invisible. The reflection will focus specifically on the place that populations and languages of African origin have been occupying in the "official" narratives of European history.
