Abstract/Resumo
The aim of this paper is to assess the application of the Modulor, the system of
proportions created by Le Corbusier (1887–1965), to the Oliveira do Hospital
Pousada, located in Portugal and designed by Manuel Mendes Tainha (1922–2012).
This application of the Modulor has already been referred to in other works, yet
its extent and meaning have never been investigated in depth. The assessment of
the application of the Modulor in the Pousada will be supported by a review of the
known sketches and technical drawings, which are kept in the Calouste Gulbenkian
Foundation’s Art Library in Lisbon, and by the dimensional survey carried out on
the building. The understanding of this application will be framed in the context
of an assessment of the importance of geometry in the design thought of Manual
Tainha, who was one of the protagonists of the revision of the Modern Movement in
Portuguese architecture of the 1950s.
