Abstract/Resumo
Health inequalities in urban peripheries significantly impact older populations, particularly regarding access to public spaces, essential services, and safe infrastructure. Research shows that walkable environments emerge as crucial for promoting active ageing by fostering mobility, social engagement and well-being. Studies indicate that proximity to local services increases walking frequency among older adults (Gauvin et al., 2012), while vibrant, pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods enhance physical activity and social inclusion (Marquet & Miralles-Guasch, 2015). This paper explores walkability as a strategic urban planning tool to reduce spatial health disparities and promote active ageing, especially amid global challenges such as climate change and socio-political instability (Santos et al., 2022). This study adopts a multidimensional perspective on "place," recognizing it not merely as a geographic space but as a dynamic intersection of physical, social, cultural, economic and environmental factors. By doing so, it proposes a framework of indicators to assess how walkable public spaces in peripheral urban areas can foster health equity for ageing populations. A literature review highlights how walkability supports not only physical health but also mental well-being and social cohesion. Safe, accessible neighbourhoods encourage spontaneous social interactions and reduce isolation among older residents. Furthermore, walkable environments decrease dependence on cars, contributing to more sustainable cities. This paper also stresses the importance of inclusive urban assessment tools that address the specific needs of older adults, particularly those in peripheral urban neighborhoods. Many existing planning models overlook issues of mobility, accessibility, and cognitive diversity. Integrating participatory design approaches can help align policies with the lived experiences of seniors. In conclusion, walkability in urban peripheries is a vital strategy to support active ageing and reduce spatial inequality. The findings from this research advocate for a people-centered, locally responsive planning approach that fosters accessible, healthier, more inclusive, and resilient cities for ageing populations.
