Susana de Noronha (Anthropologist/Sociologist; Poet-Lyricist; Scientific Illustrator) is a Researcher on the project fAIces – Facial Recognition Technologies: Etho-Assemblages and Alternative Futures (Subproject Artists), coordinated by Helena Machado under a European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant and based at CIES-Iscte – Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology, University Institute of Lisbon. Within the fAIces project, working at the intersection of Science and Technology Studies (STS), Anthropology of Art, and Visual and Material Culture Studies, her research explores how artists creatively engage with facial recognition technologies, emphasizing repertoires of resistance, critique, and alternative sociotechnical imaginaries.

While completing her Licentiate degree, she was distinguished with the Bernardino Machado Award for Anthropology 2003 (Best Student) from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, U.Coimbra. Her MA dissertation in Sociology (Faculty of Economics, U.Coimbra) was awarded the 2007 CES Award for Young Portuguese-speaking Social Scientists by an international jury convened by the Centre for Social Studies (CES), U.Coimbra. Her Ph.D. in Sociology (2012, summa cum laude, Faculty of Economics, U.Coimbra), followed by postdoctoral research (2013-2018, CES), consolidated her expertise at the intersection of Anthropology of Art, Medical Anthropology, and Science and Technology Studies. This research trajectory at the intersection of art, visual/material culture and illness narratives was further recognized through Women in Science 2023 from Ciência Viva – National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture, Portugal, and 30 Years, 30 Anthropologists (2023) from the Department of Life Sciences, U.Coimbra.

Her MA, Ph.D., and Postdoctoral project, all funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), resulted in three published monographs that advance understanding of the epistemological and ontological dimensions of art and visual/material culture and develop a science–art methodology for ethnographic research. The application of this methodology resulted in the creation and publication of 53 scientific illustrations in creative ethnographic drawing, contributing to the reinvention of the practice as a narrative medium and through the incorporation of metaphor and imagination. She has also authored and co-authored peer-reviewed articles in leading international journals, including Medical Anthropology, cultural geographies, International Journal of Qualitative Methods, and The British Journal of Criminology (forthcoming). Additionally, she is a poet and lyricist, with 48 published poems featured in texts related to science democratization and communication, as well as in music albums, EPs, compilations, and singles. As the lyricist of At Freddy’s House, she co-authored work included in New Talents FNAC 2009 (Music category) by Fnac Portugal.

Her earlier academic appointments include Invited Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology, Institute of Social Sciences (ICS), U.Minho (2022 to 2025): Researcher at the Centre for Social Studies (CES), U.Coimbra (2013 to 2025); Invited Teacher, CLACSO - Latin American Council of Social Sciences, Argentina, Postgraduate Network's E-learning Seminars (2018-2022); and Invited Assistant Professor at ESAC, Polytechnic University of Coimbra (2004-2005). She also served on the Anthropology Evaluation Panel for the 2026 FCT Call for PhD Studentships; on the Editorial Board of the CES Collection Book Series, U.Coimbra Press (IUC) (2022 to 2025); as Co-coordinator of the Science, Economy, and Society Research Group (NECES-CES); and as a member of the Standing Committee of the CES Scientific Board (2020 to 2022).
