Alexandra Areia, Architect. Invited Assistant Professor of Architectural History at the Faculty of Architecture of University of Porto (FAUP) and Integrated Researcher at DINÂMIA’CET-Iscte, Centre for the Study of Socioeconomic Change and the Territory, in the research group “Cities and Territories”. Develops research on the communication and representation of architecture, with a particular focus on filmic formats, and was recently awarded the FCT junior researcher contract with the project Architecture Television (ARCH-TV): The televised dimension of architectural action, from Portugal’s first broadcast to the EU digital decade (CEEC, 6th edition, 2023). Graduated in Architecture from University of Minho (EAAUM) in 2003, attended the Erasmus Program at École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Paris-Val de Seine (ENSAPVS) and attained a MSc in Architecture and Urban Culture in 2007 at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) e Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB). Holds a PhD in Architecture in 2019 at ISCTE-IUL (FCT’s grant awarded) with a thesis supervised by Ana Vaz Milheiro entitled: Architectonic discourses, in filmic format. The singular case of Manuel Graça Dias and his television program (RTP, 1992-96) [Approved with Distinction]. Alexandra was a contracted post-doctoral research fellow in MCMH (Middle Class Mass Housing in Europe, Africa and Asia) [PTDC/ART-DAQ/30594/2017] and a scholarship holder in COAST TO COAST (Late Portuguese Infrastructural Development in Continental Africa (Angola and Mozambique): Critical and Historical Analysis and Postcolonial Assessment [PTDC/ATP-AQI/0742/2014], both coordinated by Ana Vaz Milheiro. She was member of the COST-Action Middle-Class Mass Housing in Europe [CA 18137] and member of organizing committee of 2 scientific conferences: Optimistic Suburbia 2 (2021) and Colonial and Post-colonial Landscapes (2019). Alexandra was responsible for selecting television archival content from the Portuguese public television archive (RTP) for the exhibition Habitar Lisboa (Garagem Sul - CCB, 2023); co-curated, with Joaquim Moreno, the exhibition and publication RADAR VENEZA: Portuguese Architects at the Biennale 1975-2021 (Casa da Arquitectura - Portuguese Center for Architecture, 2021), and co-author the book A Map of Lisbon in Cinema (Dafne, 2019). Alexandra has previous experience in audiovisual production in the context of scientific research and specialized publications, including designing video essays for R&D projects and digital publications such as J–A (Jornal Arquitectos), coordinating the recording of filmed interviews for inclusion in exhibitions, and organizing screenings and round tables on the links between architecture and the built environment with cinema and film.
