Joana Gouveia Alves (1982) is a researcher, architect and editor specialized in the field of architecture. She holds a PhD in Architecture from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland) and Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). The thesis entitled “Permanence and Persistence: Conception, Construction and Conversion of Modern Cinema Theatres [1910-1939]” analysed the invention of cinema as a new building-type and the recent conversion of early cinema theatres into other functions. Her published work focuses on modern architecture, modern cinema theatres and sustainable architecture. She is a member of the Scientific Committee of CA (Cinema & Architecture) Magazine (Spain) and has collaborated with Docomomo Journal and NU Magazine. Previously, she was a lecturer at EUAC (Coimbra) and doctoral assistant at LTH2-EPFL laboratory, coordinated by Prof. Bruno Marchand (Lausanne). Recently she engaged as Science Manager in ISTAR (ISCTE-IUL) helping to develop proposals of research projects and other scientific activities.
